Case Study: Corroded Sewage Treatment Plant Electrical Enclosure Replacement

Binder Limited was recently awarded a contract to maintain a portfolio of sewage assets for a large Housing Association across the East of England.

During the very first service visit to one of the sewage treatment plants within the portfolio, our engineers identified a significant issue with the electrical control enclosure. The existing enclosure had become severely corroded and had deteriorated to the point where it was no longer considered safe.

With the electrical controls playing a critical role in the operation of the sewage treatment plant, the issue required prompt attention to protect the equipment and reduce the risk of future operational problems.

The Challenge

The existing electrical enclosure had suffered significant corrosion following prolonged exposure to the elements.

Its condition meant it was no longer providing suitable protection for the electrical equipment housed inside. Leaving the enclosure in place could have increased the risk of damage to the controls and potential disruption to the operation of the sewage treatment plant.

Key requirements included:

  • Making the installation safe
  • Protecting the electrical controls from further exposure to the elements
  • Providing a more durable, long-term solution
  • Completing the work quickly to minimise disruption
  • Ensuring the replacement installation was suitable for the operating environment

Our Solution

Binder acted immediately following the service visit.

Within 24 hours of identifying the issue, our team prepared and submitted a detailed quotation to the Housing Association. This included our recommendations, a clear scope of works and the relevant method statement.

Providing all the required information from the outset allowed the client to review the proposed solution and approve the remedial works quickly.

GRP Electrical Enclosure

Following approval, the existing corroded enclosure was removed and replaced with a robust GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) enclosure.

GRP provides a durable and weather-resistant solution, making it well suited to protecting electrical equipment in demanding outdoor environments.

New Concrete Base

As part of the works, Binder installed a new concrete base to provide a secure and stable foundation for the replacement enclosure.

The new enclosure was then installed and the treatment plant controls safely housed within it, providing improved protection from the elements.

In-House Electrical Expertise

All electrical works were completed by Binder’s own in-house electricians.

Having the required expertise within our team allowed us to manage the project efficiently from the initial identification of the problem through to installation and completion.

Fast Turnaround

Following approval from the client, the remedial works were completed in just two days.

Binder’s ability to respond quickly was supported by the extensive range of parts, equipment and materials held within our own stores.

Maintaining our own stock means we can often respond to urgent requirements without lengthy delays while specialist parts and materials are sourced. This helps us keep projects moving and minimise disruption for our clients.

Results and Benefits

The completed works provided an immediate improvement to the safety and long-term protection of the sewage treatment plant’s electrical controls.

Improved Safety

The severely corroded enclosure was removed and replaced, returning the electrical installation to a safe standard.

Long-Term Protection

The new GRP enclosure provides a robust and weather-resistant housing, helping to protect the electrical controls from corrosion and environmental exposure.

Improved Reliability

Protecting the control equipment reduces the risk of damage and helps support the reliable ongoing operation of the sewage treatment plant.

Minimal Disruption

From identifying the issue during the initial service visit to providing a quotation within 24 hours and completing the approved works in two days, Binder was able to resolve the problem quickly and efficiently.

Proactive Sewage Asset Maintenance

This project demonstrates the value of regular sewage treatment plant servicing and proactive asset management.

Identifying deterioration early allows remedial work to be planned and completed before it develops into a more serious failure that could lead to additional costs or disruption.

For clients managing multiple sewage assets, Binder can provide ongoing servicing alongside repairs, electrical works and refurbishment. This provides access to one experienced team capable of identifying problems, recommending practical solutions and carrying out the necessary works.

The result: a safer, fully protected electrical control system, improved long-term reliability and minimal disruption to the client’s sewage treatment operations.
