    A Father-Son Duo at Binder

    In this edition of our ‘Meet the Team’ blog, we introduce Josh and Jonathan (JB) Bloomfield—a father and son duo who both play key roles at Binder. Josh, who joined the team 6 months ago as an Operator Assistant, is still relatively new to the company, while JB brings a wealth of experience with 8 years as a Tanker Driver. Despite the differences in their roles, the bond they share at work and at home is evident.

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you?
    I spend most of my day out on the road in the artic lorry, assisting clients with jobs that need my skills. The role is high-volume, so there’s always something happening, whether I’m helping to load or ensuring everything is running smoothly on-site. I don’t see my dad much during the day, but when I do, it’s usually just a quick wave across the yard. Occasionally, we’ll even be on the same job and end up sharing a vehicle.

    What’s your favourite part of your job?
    The variety of work and the constant challenge. No two days are the same, and I appreciate that about the role. The support from the team at Binder also makes it a great place to work.

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you?
    My day typically starts early as I head out on the road to complete jobs with the tanker. I travel between different locations, making sure everything runs efficiently, and I’m always on the move. It’s a lot of responsibility, but it’s rewarding to see the job done right. While I don’t see Josh often throughout the day, it’s nice when our paths cross, either for a quick chat or a shared job.

    What’s your favourite part of your job?
    The independence of being out on the road and managing my own schedule is something I really enjoy. It’s also rewarding to finish a job and know I’ve done it well, all while being part of a strong, supportive team.

    New Managers Appointed at Binder

    Binder is pleased to announce the recent promotions of two integral team members, Steve Burke and Oliver Fenn, to managerial roles within the company. These promotions mark a significant step in strengthening the operational framework of the company’s tankering and maintenance departments. Both individuals bring extensive experience and a commitment to excellence that will further enhance the company’s ability to deliver high-quality, reliable services to its growing customer base.

    Steve Burke Appointed as Tankering Manager

    With a diverse fleet of over 20 vacuum tankers, each equipped to handle capacities ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 gallons, Binder offers efficient and environmentally responsible waste disposal services. In his new role as Tankering Manager, Steve Burke will oversee the tankering department, managing day-to-day scheduling and ensuring the fleet’s maintenance and safety. His responsibilities include leading a team of schedulers and drivers to provide reliable service to our wide range of customers.

    ‘I’ve had the privilege of working at Binder for 7 ½ years and during that time, I’ve gained invaluable experience that has shaped my career. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to learn and grow within the company, and I’m proud to have recently been promoted to Tankering Manager.

    Oliver Fenn Promoted to Maintenance Manager

    Having dedicated over a decade to Binder, previously serving as Supervising Service Coordinator, Oliver Fenn brings extensive experience to his new position as Maintenance Manager. In this role, he will manage the daily scheduling of more than 30 service engineers and oversee a team of engineering schedulers. His team is responsible for servicing, responding to breakdowns, and performing repair work, ensuring that customers receive prompt and efficient maintenance services.

    A Tour of Haba Engineering

    On the 5th and 6th of February, Binder had the privilege of visiting Haba Engineering in Poland, where a team including Oliver Fenn (Service Manager), Elliott Smith (Electrician), and Ed Binder (Director) received an insightful tour of the company’s state-of-the-art facilities. This visit offered a unique opportunity to learn about Haba Engineering’s servicing and commissioning processes for their Bio Easy Flow range of Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), and the team was thoroughly impressed with the operation.

    During the factory tour, Haba Engineering’s team provided an in-depth look at their meticulous processes for manufacturing and commissioning the Bio Easy Flow treatment plants. The attention to detail and commitment to excellence were evident throughout, and the team was particularly impressed with the performance and reliability of the products. The treatment plants have been designed with sustainability in mind, demonstrating Haba Engineering’s position at the forefront of innovation in the field.

    The visit also included meeting several key members of the Haba Engineering family. Rafal Lusina, the founder and chairman, and his son Piotr Lusina, the head of operations, welcomed the group, along with Marta Lysiak, head of exports and Rafal’s daughter, and Sebastian Lysiak, head of the innovation and technical departments, who is married to Marta. Additionally, they met Michal Sypek, Sales and Marketing Manager for Poland, and MK, the UK Sales Manager. The team’s depth of expertise was both impressive and inspiring.

    The visit further reinforced Binder’s confidence in the Bio Easy Flow treatment plants, solidifying belief in their exceptional quality and environmental impact. It was a pleasure to engage with a company that balances innovation with sustainability, all while maintaining a strong family-driven approach to business.

    Do’s and Don’ts for Maintaining Your Sewage Treatment System

    Proper care of your sewage treatment system is essential to ensure it functions efficiently, complies with environmental regulations, and minimises harm to the surrounding ecosystem. As experts in wastewater solutions, including installation, servicing, and maintenance, we understand the importance of responsible system management. By following these simple do’s and don’ts, you can avoid costly repairs and ensure your system operates smoothly for years to come.

    Do’s

    1. Think Before You Dispose
      Be mindful of what goes down the sink, toilet, or drains, as harmful substances can disrupt the system’s operation.
    2. Educate Users
      Inform everyone using your system—family members, guests, or staff—that it requires special care. Explain how their actions impact its efficiency.
    3. Follow Product Instructions
      Always read labels and use the manufacturer’s recommended doses for cleaning products.
    4. Use Cleaning Products Sparingly
      Apply cleaning products in small amounts and at regular intervals to avoid overloading the system.
    5. Distribute Laundry Throughout the Week
      Instead of doing all your laundry on a single day, spread it out to prevent strain on the system.
    6. Be Consistent with Products

    Don’ts

    1. Avoid Spring Cleaning Overload

    2. Don’t Designate a “Washing Day”
      Processing large volumes of laundry in one day can strain the system.
    3. Skip Harsh Chemicals

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you? 

    Oli – I am responsible for handling incoming customer queries and booking services and breakdowns. I manage a team of 30 engineers which involves booking in visits and any special requirements as well as ensuring the team on the ground have everything they need to efficiently carry out their scheduled jobs. 

    Laura – I work alongside director Charlie and with my line manager Kerry (Office Manager) assisting with compliance, financial administration, and logistics to keep everything on track for the construction team.

    What’s it like working together at Binder? 

    It’s been pretty straightforward; working together is made easier by understanding how each of us handles different tasks and assignments. The office banter flows freely because of this, and we often share a laugh, with colleagues joining in. Sometimes, we take it to the point where it looks like more than it is, which turns into a great inside joke for us.

    Overall, I’m finding it easy, and although we might have worried about bringing work friction home before starting this arrangement, it hasn’t been the case at all—it’s been seamless.

    What’s your favourite part of working at Binder? Being a family run business; everyone is approachable and there’s lots of playful banter within the working environment.

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? They like travelling the world, walking the dogs and have season tickets at Ipswich Town FC.

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you? A typical day for me involves leading the financial team and focusing on reviewing our financial performance, developing strategic plans, and identifying new opportunities for growth and diversification. I spend a lot of my time analysing data to help drive initiatives that improve efficiency, and ensuring we’re on track to achieve long-term success. Every day brings something new!

    What’s your favourite part of your job? Working with a great team and strategic planning to future proof the business.

I also produce reports and keep all administrative tasks up to date, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks. Managing the administration team is a key part of my role, where I make sure that everyone follows established processes to keep operations running smoothly.

    What’s your favourite part of your job? The variety of work and volume of it – I’m never bored! I also love the family feel working here, you get a real sense of support. It’s a lovely company to work for.

    What’s your desert island disc? Bob Marley – Jamaica Trip

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I enjoy spending quality time with my 2 children and going on long walks with my dog. When time allows I love to take trips with the family.

    Understanding Nutrient Neutrality

    Nutrient pollution is a significant environmental concern affecting many of England’s most vital natural habitats. In freshwater environments and estuaries, elevated levels of nutrients—particularly nitrogen and phosphorus—can accelerate the growth of certain plants, disrupting natural ecosystems and harming wildlife.

    Understanding Nutrient Pollution

    Nutrient pollution arises from several sources, which can vary depending on the location. Common contributors include:

    • Sewage treatment works: These facilities can release high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus if not adequately managed.
    • Septic tanks: Improperly maintained septic systems can leak nutrients into nearby water bodies.
    • Livestock and arable farming: Agricultural runoff often contains fertilisers and manure rich in nutrients, which can wash into rivers and streams.
    • Industrial processes: Certain industries discharge nutrient-rich wastewater as a by-product of their operations.

    When these excess nutrients enter water bodies, they promote the overgrowth of algae and other aquatic plants. This growth can suffocate other aquatic life, reduce biodiversity, and alter the natural balance of these habitats, leading to a decline in water quality and the health of the ecosystem.

    The Issue at Hand

    Several water-dependent Habitat Sites across England, including areas of North Norfolk and the Broads are already in ‘unfavourable condition’ due to excessive nitrogen and/or phosphorus levels. This situation poses an urgent need to protect these habitats and their wildlife. Under the Habitats Regulations, any new development projects that cannot demonstrate they will not add to nutrient pollution are unlikely to receive planning permission.

    At Binder we are committed to addressing this by working in close collaboration with key stakeholders, including developers, local planning authorities, manufacturers such as HABA and environmental consultants Nutrient Neutral to provide efficient, sustainable solutions for nutrient management in development projects and for customers looking to upgrade their private sewage systems.

    What is Nutrient Neutrality?

    Nutrient neutrality is a strategic approach designed to mitigate the impact of new developments on nutrient levels in sensitive habitats. The goal is to allow Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to grant development permissions without exacerbating nutrient pollution in designated Habitats Sites particularly in North Norfolk (see map).

    This approach serves as a short-term measure, part of a larger governmental effort to address the root causes of nutrient overload. A coordinated response involving various departments, including the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), supports this initiative. The aim is to tackle nutrient pollution from its primary sources, such as:

    • Improving sewage treatment facilities to reduce nutrient discharge
    • Enhancing septic tank regulations and maintenance
    • Promoting sustainable agricultural practices to limit runoff
    • Regulating industrial processes to minimise nutrient waste

    Do I Qualify?

    If you have a private sewage system (non-commercial), the small-scale discharge criteria are a set of tests to determine if the phosphorus discharged via a drainage field, is deemed likely to reach the surface water and hence the protected site, thereby having a ‘Likely Significant Effect’ (LSE).  The criteria were derived from the ‘Small scale discharges of phosphorus: Low risk mapping’ was provided by Natural England to LPA’s in March 2022.  

    If a tank meets all the criteria, the tank is deemed as not having an LSE and therefore not eligible for upgrade. If one of the criteria is not met, then the discharge is considered to have failed the criteria, thereby having a likely significant effect of the protected site and can be upgraded. The small-scale criteria are provided below:

    1. To ensure that there is no significant in combination effect, the discharge to ground should be at least 200m from any other discharge to ground 
    2. The drainage field will not be subject to significant flooding, e.g. it is not in Flood Zone 2 or 3
    3. The drainage field is more than 40m from any surface water feature e.g. ditch, drain, watercourse 
    4. The drainage field is more than 5 m from the designated site boundary (or sensitive interest feature).  
    5. The drainage field is in an area with a slope no greater than 15%. 
    6. There are no other known factors which would expedite the transport of phosphorus for example fissured geology, insufficient soil below the drainage pipes, known sewer flooding, conditions in the soil/geology that would cause remobilisation phosphorus, presence of mineshafts.  
    7. The drainage field is in an area where the high groundwater depth is at least 2m below the surface at all times 
    8. The percolation test has been performed on the proposed location of the drainage field with the resulting value lying within the required range under the Building Regulations 2010, which specify an average Vp value of between 12 and 100

    Our Green Initiative began back in April 2022 and since we announced the launch we’ve donated over 395 trees – far exceeding our target of 100.

    Thank you to those that have already supported the campaign. Here’s more information about how you’ve made a difference as well as guidance from the Woodland Trust about the benefits of native tree planting.

    Our promise was to gift a native tree for every new residential installation and as of the end of August 2024 we have gifted 395 native crab apple trees to new customers across the Eastern Region.

    This is just one of the steps we are taking as part of our aim to become more sustainable as a business as we look at how we can positively impact climate change within our community.

    Reminiscing Our 60th Anniversary

    What a fantastic weekend it was as we celebrated the 60th anniversary of Binder Ltd! The event was filled with laughter, joy, and fond memories, marking a major milestone in our company’s journey. Wallace Binder described the evening as “a very special event for the Binder family.” We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to making the celebration so special.

    A huge thank you to tru7.com and the Nicholl’s family for providing the lighting equipment, ensuring our venue was perfectly illuminated. Your ongoing support over the years has been truly invaluable. A special mention also goes to WCS Environmental Engineering for the stunning branded blue WPL DMS sewage treatment plant, delivered with gold bows to commemorate the occasion—an unforgettable touch!

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I enjoy spending quality time with my family and fishing.

    From classroom to workplace: insights from a week at Binder

    Binder welcomed Sam Studd, a student at Claydon High School for a week-long work experience placement. This opportunity allowed Sam to gain firsthand experience in a professional environment, enriching his understanding of workplace dynamics and responsibilities.

    During his week with us, Sam engaged in various other administrative tasks, broadening his understanding of the day-to-day operations within a business environment. These tasks included answering phones and assisting with general office duties, all of which contributed to a well-rounded work experience.

    Sam assisted with product and stock management in the company’s stores. This hands-on task provided him with practical insights into inventory management, an essential aspect of any business that handles physical products. By participating in stock checks and helping to organise products, Sam learned about the logistical challenges and solutions involved in maintaining sufficient stock levels.

    Sue Garner, the careers adviser at Claydon High School, highlighted the importance of work experience for students’ development. She noted, “Work experience is important for the development of our students as they get an opportunity to see the working world first hand. Not only do they gain an understanding of the relationships between employer and employee but also how to further develop their social skills. They learn how places of work are organised, what work processes are and about employer expectations. Work experience also gives our students something to put on their CVs when they apply for jobs and apprenticeships in the future. We feel this experience is vital to our students’ development into young adults and without you this would not be possible.”

    Peter Elmslie, Customer Accounts Manager who was responsible for organising the placement and managing Sam throughout the week commented on Sam’s week with the Binder team, “Sam was enthusiastic and keen to learn whilst he was here with us and he has gained some valuable social and professional skills that we hope will prepare him for his future career’.

    Binder is keen to continue supporting young people in the local community and will be onboarding fresh talent through our apprenticeship programme in the near future as well as work experience placements next Summer. We will be sharing more information about these soon.

    Binder shines at the Suffolk Show 2024

    Binder Ltd proudly attended the Suffolk Show on 29 and 30 May 2024, marking yet another successful participation in this historic county event. Hosted at the scenic Trinity Park in Ipswich by the Suffolk Agricultural Association, the Suffolk Show is a prestigious annual celebration dating back to 1832, that celebrates the best of Suffolk’s heritage, culture, and industry.

    Despite a few rain showers, the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the visitors who came out in droves to enjoy the event’s diverse attractions and activities. The Suffolk Show is known for offering a little something for everyone, from agriculture and food to crafts and more, making it a fun experience for the whole family.

    One of the big highlights for us this year was the visit from the Duke of Gloucester. His Royal Highness took the time to meet our founder, Wally Binder, which was a real honour and a moment we’ll remember for a long time. It’s not every day you get to rub shoulders with royalty!

    We’re also thrilled to share that Binder Ltd brought home not one but two prizes this year! Our team’s hard work and creativity paid off when we won the award for Best Floral Display. Our stand was bursting with color and beauty, thanks to the dedication of our talented team. On top of that, we were awarded Best Overall Stand, a huge recognition of the effort we put into making our booth engaging and inviting for everyone who stopped by.

    Throughout the show, we had the chance to meet so many wonderful people, including our loyal customers and lots of new faces. It was fantastic to chat with everyone, share our latest products, and hear valuable feedback. These connections mean the world to us and help us keep improving and serving our community better.

    The Suffolk Show itself was packed with activities and exhibits that showcased the very best of what Suffolk has to offer. From stunning agricultural displays and mouth-watering food exhibits to unique crafts and lively entertainment, there was no shortage of things to see and do. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, making it a memorable event for all who attended.

    We want to extend a big thank you to the Suffolk Agricultural Association for putting together such a fantastic show and to all the visitors who made it a success. Winning the awards for Best Floral Display and Best Overall Stand was the cherry on top of an already amazing experience. We’re already looking forward to next year and can’t wait to do it all over again!

    Through the generations: the Studd family

    As Binder Ltd marks its 60th anniversary, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the journey of not just the company, but also the Studd family, who have been integral to our story from day one. From the early days with Bob Studd crafting bespoke trailers to young Sam Studd exploring his future with us, the Studd family’s contribution spans four generations.

    Bob Studd

    Let’s rewind to the 1950s, when Wallace Binder, our founder, teamed up with Bob Studd. Bob was a fabrication whizz, running his own independent business. In an era when ready-made parts were scarce, Bob’s skills were crucial. He worked with Wallace in his workshop on Church Lane, Claydon, crafting custom trailers and equipment from scratch. Sadly, Bob’s life was cut short at 51, but his impact on Binder was significant.

    Chris Studd

    After Bob’s passing, his son Chris Studd stepped up following his work alongside his Dad as a young teenager. Chris, now 79, still works part-time, showing his commitment to the family business. He took on servicing and repairing fleet vehicles, helping Binder Ltd expand and adapt. Working from the same Church Lane premises, Chris built on his father’s legacy, pushing the company forward and ensuring we met the growing needs of our clients.

    James Studd

    James, Chris’s son, joined the family business at 15, just like his dad and granddad. Now 53, James primarily assists with welding and fabrication jobs, and has expanded his support services maintaining the vacuum elements of the tanker fleet. His efforts have kept us at the forefront of the industry, maintaining the high standards set by his predecessors.

    Sam Studd

    Enter Sam Studd, James’s 15-year-old son, who recently joined us for a week of work experience, trying his hand at both technical and office work offering a taste of the working world.  Sam’s enthusiasm and curiosity into how the business works and has grown since the time of his grandfather gave us the opportunity to celebrate the four generations of the family that have worked alongside us here at Binder Ltd.

    Roy Graver awarded with long service award

    Roy Graver celebrated a big work anniversary last week and in recognition of his service, owner Wallace Binder presented him with a sovereign at Binder HQ.

    Roy has worked at Binder for over 40 years, with various roles including the building of the initial concrete products in the 70’s to the installation of sewage treatment plants and finally in the engineering team ensuring systems are fully compliant and serviced accordingly. He now works part-time supporting the development of the Binder Bio products. 

    ‘I don’t plan to leave anytime soon! I’m 73 and I love working for a family business like Binder. I feel valued and looked after by the family and I appreciate my loyalty being recognised and celebrated’ said Roy after his recent anniversary.

    How does a sewage treatment plant operate?

    In our rapidly growing urban landscapes, the management of wastewater has become an increasingly critical concern. As councils and industries seek sustainable solutions, sewage treatment plants emerge as vital players in ensuring the responsible and efficient handling of sewage. 

    At its core, a sewage treatment plant is designed to treat wastewater generated from residential, commercial, and industrial sources. The process involves removing impurities and contaminants to produce treated effluent that can be safely released into a ditch or watercourse. A well-designed system contributes not only to environmental conservation but also to public health.

    The process at Binder includes the following steps:

    Sewage arriving at our treatment plant

    1. Collection and Inflow:

    The first step involves the collection of raw sewage from various sources through a network of underground pipes. The sewage is then transported to the treatment plant, where it undergoes a series of processes so it is transformed into effluent that can be safely discharged. 

    2. Screening and Primary Treatment:

    Upon arrival at the treatment plant, the raw sewage undergoes a screening process. Following this, the primary treatment phase involves the separation of solid and liquids in sedimentation tanks, gravity allows the heavier solids to settle, forming sludge, while the relatively clearer effluent is ready for processing.

    3. Secondary Treatment:

    The next stage focuses on primary treatment, this is often achieved through biological processes, where microorganisms break down the organic pollutants. Methods used include activated sludge processes, trickling filters, and rotating biological contactors. 

    4. Tertiary Treatment:

    In some cases, a tertiary treatment phase may be employed to further refine the treated effluent. This stage aims to remove the remaining contaminants, to meet specific effluent quality standards set by the Environment Agency.

    5. Sludge Management:

    The sludge produced during the treatment process is not discarded. Instead, it undergoes further treatment, such as anaerobic digestion or mechanical dewatering, to reduce its volume and convert it into biosolids. These biosolids can be repurposed as fertilisers for agricultural use or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

    Top tips: Maintaining your septic tank or sewage plant

    Installing a new septic tank or sewage treatment plant can be expensive. This is why it’s so important to keep your existing system in good order to avoid any costly repair bills. In the current cost of living crisis, there’s a number of ways you can avoid unexpected bills when it comes to your sewage system.

    Complying with the general binding rules is very important, moreover there’s a number of additional steps you can take to monitor and minimise your energy consumption and be kinder to the local environment.

    Here’s a few top tips from us:

    • Get the sludge emptied regularly by a registered wastewater expert
    • Get your system serviced regularly
    • Keep maintenance records so you know when a service or empty is due (this is also helpful if you ever need to sell your property)
    • Fix highlighted problems straight away
    • Do not flush any sanitary items down the toilet – only the 3 P’s (Pee, Poo and {Toilet} Paper)
    • Call a specialist if you notice any signs of pollution such as sewage smells, pools of water, sludge, foam, lush weeds or grey fungus growing in your local stream or river
    • Do not put fats, oils or chemicals down the drain as they kill the bacteria that break-down the waste
    • Use low or non-phosphate detergents, which are kind to the environment

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you? I have an early start around 6.45am and spend the morning catching up with emails and follow up calls. Sometimes I will make 2/3 site visits to key accounts and other customers. This means I can tackle any customer queries and ensure projects stay to time and I also visit varied types of properties such as farm estates and country houses, often with complex requirements.

    What’s your favourite part of your job? It’s very varied and the people here make it a great place to work. My job has it’s challenges but they are tackled with professionalism from my colleagues.

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I like going on weekend drives and clay pidgeon shooting.

The job is varied so I don’t know where I might be day to day! Jack – I am training with support from my manager James Studd. This involves keeping the company vehicles ticking over, repairing parts, welding and fabrication etc.

    What’s your favourite part of your job? Nathan – It’s got to be the comradery within the team and the banter we have that makes it such a fun place to work. Jack – I agree, it’s definitely great to have the laughs we have as a team.

    What’s your desert island disc? Nathan – Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd. Jack – This is Sleepy Hallow, Sleepy Hallow.

    To celebrate Father’s Day we meet another father & son duo who have been working in the team at Binder for nearly a year.

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you? We both make up part of the servicing team, maintaining existing systems and also fitting equipment such as autodials for new systems. We mostly work on residential properties but sometimes we visit larger properties and small businesses across the county and beyond.

    What’s your favourite part of your job? Philip – I like the freedom to get the job done! Alan – I enjoy it all! It’s a hugely rewarding job.

    Success at the Suffolk Show

    The 2023 edition of the Suffolk Show had a tremendous turnout, hosting a day out for everyone at Trinity Park, Suffolk on Wednesday 31 May and Thursday 1 June.

    The event hosted a jam packed programme with equine displays and livestock competitions. Some of the 2023 highlights included the Farm Discovery Zone, NEW Farm4Future exhibit and Suffolk Skills Zone.

    The Binder team attended the county event and customary to tradition hosted a stunning stand with floral displays and clever use of water features surrounded by our product suite.

    Director Ed Binder, Sales Manager Tony Shaw and Customer Accounts Manager Peter Elmslie (below) proudly accepted First Prize for ‘Best stand representing environment and/or countryside’.

    A Royal Celebration

    Around 800 people from across the Claydon and Barham community and beyond celebrated the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s in style with an exciting Coronation Party on Bank Holiday Monday (8th May).

    Hosted by the Claydon and Barham Recreation Committee, the event raised £435 for the Recreation Ground and overall £1897 was raised by all the local organisations that took part.

    The event was sponsored and funded by Barham Parish Council and Claydon and Whitton Parish Council and District Councillors.

    There was something for all the family including a bouncy castle, face painting, stalls and refreshments as well as free live music from bands including J.S & The Lockerbillies.

    The raffle included prizes from local businesses including a family ticket to Hollow Trees Farm donated by Binder Ltd.

    Congratulations to the organisers and volunteers for making the event such a huge success!

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I spend a lot of time enjoying walks with my dog Jess, spending time with my family and cycling.

    Celebrating 40 years service

    Treatment Plant Manager Gavin Lockwood celebrated a big work anniversary this week.

    Gavin has worked at Binder for over 40 years and in recognition of his service, owner Wallace Binder presented him with a half sovereign at Binder HQ.

    ‘Gavin has been an integral part of our team ever since he started working for us. His knowledge and experience, combined with his work ethic and dedication to the business is highly valued and we’re all very grateful for his 40 years of service.’ comments Wallace, owner and founder of the company.

    Over the last 4 decades Gavin has worked in a number of roles, evolving throughout the growth of the company. Some of the key milestones he remembers includes the company achieving it’s first BSI accreditations, it’s 50th anniversary celebrations, and his 20 year anniversary.

    ‘I have worked here all my life and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. The next milestone is beating the long-service record which stands at just over 50 years!’ says Gavin about his recent achievement.

    A History of Binder Ltd

    Binder is an established family-run business based in Claydon, Suffolk trusted by customers for over 55 years. Discover more about our history and how the business has evolved into the company it is today.

    Wallace Binder grew up in Suffolk on the family’s farm and as a young man worked on all aspects of farming, he married in March 1960 and son Charlie was born in June 1961 followed by Richard in 1963. This demanded a look at the income and diversification looked essential. A family friend purchased an old digger for additional part-time work and Wallace joined him for a local job installing a new septic tank. After completing the project, Wallace identified a gap in the market for an affordable concrete ring and he spent evenings and weekends developing a new solution, eventually leaving the family farm to pursue his business idea. 

    In 1963 Wallace’s grandfather, on his mother’s side, had a precast concrete business as well as his farm.

    In 1964, Wallace started Binder Precast-Concrete providing concrete rings to homes and businesses across Suffolk. During the first year of business the organisers of the Suffolk Show moved to their permanent home at the Suffolk Showground (now known as Trinity Park) and Binder Precast-Concrete supplied the concrete rings for their sewage systems. They remain amongst the most loyal customers of Binder Ltd who still supply their needs

    The move to Progress Works in Claydon, Suffolk took place in January 1966 and the business developed new concrete products to expand its product range. Further diversification took place and other products were made including the development of the oblong concrete ring, which remained a staple product for many years. 

    Binder Filler Maintenance was incorporated in 1972 to supply and service the pumps that were used in the septic tanks and the total number of staff grew to 10 as the business expanded. 

    Further diversification took place in 1979 when Binder Filter Maintenance took delivery of a complete package sewage treatment plant, manufactured in Finland. The business was amongst just 3 UK companies that took delivery. 

    Binder Construction was born in 1980 and Charlie Binder (son of Wallace) who had already completed his apprenticeship took over running this department for the supply and installation of sewage treatment plants and pump stations. 

    In 1986 all divisions of the business were incorporated to become Binder Ltd and the team-maintained responsibility of their respective specialism – Charlie Binder managing the construction side of the company, Richard Binder the maintenance team and Wallace Binder leading the development of the company. 

    In 1988 the business purchased its very first tanker, servicing residential homes and businesses with septic tanks and sewage treatment plants across Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. This developed the need for our own sewage treatment plant at our works to enable us to service breakdowns out of normal hours. 

    During 1991, Binder achieved its first certification. The ISO90001 standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. These are all elements that remain central to the ethos of the business. 

    The family business continues to be expanded with Shaun Prendergast joining the team, overseeing the HR department, and managing a variety of Binder’s commercial customer accounts. Wallace’s grandchildren Ed Binder who oversees the IT department and Jenny Binder who is now the company accountant. The company now employs over 90 staff offering a wide range of services including installation, maintenance and repair, tankering and an onsite treatment facility.

    For this week’s ‘Meet the Team’ we speak to Jamie who’s been with the business for over 3 years and operates our newest addition to the Binder fleet!

    How long have you worked at Binder? 3 years 4 months

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you? I visit an average of 8-10 customers in a day to empty their sewage treatment plant. My experience enables me to work as a single operator and I drive one of the newest vehicles in the fleet – I am adapting to it’s new high-tech features.

    What’s your favourite part of your job? I really enjoy the fact that every single day is different and although it can be a dirty job, you make customers really happy once the job is done.

    What’s your desert island disc? Anything really!

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I am always busy! If I am not at home with the kids (aged 4 and 6), you’ll find me swimming or cycling.

I travel across the entire county so there’s a lot to see and some amazing places I wouldn’t otherwise visit. I also enjoy the confined space work I do. It’s challenging but hugely rewarding too.

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I spend most of my time in the gym or playing football, but I also have a newborn son so he’s keeping me busy!

    What’s a typical day at Binder for you? 

    It’s pretty varied but we install new sewage treatment plants and septic tanks. This involves digging excavations, laying pipes, and operating machinery including diggers and dumpers. We also replace tanks that are at the end of their lifespan. 

    What’s your favourite part of your job? Simon – I feel appreciated here and I just enjoy the job all round! Daniel – The team here are great, there’s a sense of community in the wider team.

    What’s your desert island disc? Both – probably an 80’s compilation.

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Simon – I enjoy long walks with the dog. I am also a dab hand at the DIY at home. I am a fair-weather golfer. Daniel – I spend the weekend with my friends and also play football.

    Every tree counts – Green Initiative update

    Back in April, we announced the launch of our brand new Green Initiative. A promise to gift a native tree for every new residential installation.

    We are delighted to provide an update on our sustainability initiative as we head into the final months of 2022. We are well on our way to achieving our target of 100 trees and as it stands (14th November 2022), we have gifted 94 native crab apple trees to new customers across the Eastern Region.

    This is just one small step as part of our long-term objectives to ensure business operations are more sustainable – an integral part of our company ethos. 

    In addition to the Green Initiative, we have also donated a tree to be planted on the Suffolk Showground to support the Suffolk Show’s contribution to the Queens Green Canopy project. Find out more about this project here.

    What’s your favourite part of your job? Being able to help a customer, no matter how large or small the problem or query might be.

    What’s your desert island disc? My favourite would have to be Car Radio, Twenty One Pilots.

    What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Going to watch the super blues at Portman Road.

    Focus On: Septic Tank vs. Treatment Plant

    Septic tanks and sewage treatment plants (STP’s) are often confused as the same thing, however they are not.  

    How do they work?

    A STP works in a similar way to a septic tank by acting as a trap for the solid waste and discharging the waste water but with a big difference; STP units are designed to treat the wastewater before it is discharged, and is therefore permitted to discharge to a watercourse such as a river, stream or pond and in many instances can be discharged into a storm water soak-away.

    What are the differences?

    • STP’s require electricity to run the air pump and other mechanical components however septic tanks can run power-free
    • Septic tanks don’t require servicing (although they do require emptying), whereas sewage treatment plants require servicing and emptying.
    • A typical septic tank has two ‘zones’, whereas a sewage treatment plant typically has three.
    • A STP provides treatment of the waste, whereas a septic tank simply separates it – this means that the waste water that leaves a STP is cleaner than what leaves a septic tank.

    What does this mean to you? 

    There are a lot of properties out there which currently have a septic tank that discharges to a local watercourse (instead of to a soakaway system or drainage field). As of January 1st 2020, this is no longer legal. 

    If you own a property with this drainage system, you must upgrade it by that date. If you are selling a property with this system in place before 2020, you must upgrade it before selling. If you are buying a property with a septic tank discharging to a watercourse and this hasn’t yet been discussed – don’t until agreement has been made about upgrading the system.

    Newest addition to the fleet

    Binder welcomed a new addition to it’s fleet in July this year, with an order of the brand new Mercedes-Benz 8×2 Arocs 3236L from Motus Truck & Van, Ipswich.

    The new vehicle boasts a host of innovative and modern technologies that make it ideal for maximising efficiency and manoeuvrability thanks to it’s selection of impressive high-tech equipment.

    One of the most impressive safety features is MirrorCam; a ground-breaking solution to ordinary rear view mirrors which sees cameras fitted alongside and on the roof of the vehicle for optimum visibility, especially in narrow lanes.

    Whale Tankers of Solihull supplied the large 4,000 gallon tank and are currently preparing to deliver a 3,000 gallon tank for it’s sister vehicle due to be delivered at the end of the Summer.

    The latest truck is one of the largest we currently have available and will offer significant benefits to the team on the ground in terms of safety and efficiency.

    Do you meet the General Binding Rules?

    Industry standards released by the Environmental Agency in 2015, mean any sewage treatment plant that discharges wastewater must meet strict regulations. 

    If your treatment system was installed before 1983 you do not need to do anything, as there was no British Standard in place before then. You must, however, still meet the other general binding rules that apply to you.

    The new January 2020 General Binding regulations are thorough and rules depend on how much you discharge, where you discharge and if you are a commercial entity. 

    Some of the key standards outlined in the regulations are: 

    • Discharge can only be domestic sewage
    • In an area where the water level changes depending on the tide, discharge must be below the mean low water spring mark.
    • Plant must meet the relevant British Standard.
    • Plant must be the correct size for the amount of sewage it will need to treat. This should meet the sizing requirements in British Water’s guidelines.
    • Regular maintenance in line with manufacturer’s instructions should be adhered, and it the system must always be in good working order
    • The system must be regularly emptied – once a year or in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. The company used to dispose of the waste must be a registered waste carrier.

    Celebrating Essex Agriculture

    After a two year hiatus, thousands flocked to the Tendring Hundred Show at Lawford House Park on Saturday 9 July!

    The event organised by Tendring Hundred Farmers’ Club, welcomed record crowds of over 20,000, who gathered in support of celebrating agriculture in the county.

    Binder joined over 250 trade stands and exhibits, showcasing our Green Initiative campaign and range of installation, servicing and maintenance products and services.

    It was fantastic to return in support of the event once again and it provided a great opportunity for the team to meet visitors from across the breadth of the county and beyond.

    We look forward to returning for the 2023 event on Saturday 8 July 2023.

    Launch of the Green Initiative

    Ahead of Earth Day 2022 (April 22), we are delighted to announce the launch of our brand new Green Initiative. 

    For every residential installation, we are gifting a native tree to kick-start our sustainability journey toward a more environmentally-conscious company. This is just one small step as part of our long-term objectives to ensure business operations are more sustainable – an integral part of our company ethos.

    Not only do trees provide a habitat for the  local ecosystem, but they also contribute to the improvement of air quality. Did you know, on average, one tree produces almost 118kg of oxygen and absorbs up to 22kg of carbon each year?

    Scientific evidence shows that trees benefit the environment and increase health and wellbeing by:

    • Helping to purify the air
    • Lowering the air temperature
    • Preventing flooding
    • Sustaining wildlife
    • Improving soil quality
    • Lowering stress
